    FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

EMILY MORGAN is a Bowman 57’ cutter ketch designed by Holman and Pye, built by Bowman of Emsworth UK and finished by Southampton Boat Services of Hampshire UK in 1982. Named EMILY MORGAN after the Yellow Rose of Texas, she has been operated commercially by her current (fifth) owners, of 12 years, offering ocean crossings and Caribbean charter. They also completed the World ARC in 2018/2019.

She has been annually inspected including an out of water survey every 5 years and is maintained by her owners to a very high standard to comply with the coding requirements and their meticulous attention to detail.

    OWNER’S COMMENTS:

The time has come for us to find a new custodian for EMILY MORGAN. EMILY MORGAN is a legendary Bowman 57, the most amazing seagoing thoroughbred yacht.

After 12 amazing we now have 3 young grandchildren and an aging parent, so it is time for us to spend more time ashore. She will be available from July 2023.

We bought EMILY MORGAN in January 2011 with the intention of going Blue Water sailing and chartering to fund our lifestyle. We didn’t want any old boat; we wanted a classic thoroughbred yacht. She had to be a ‘go anywhere’ yacht, comfortable at sea and at anchor, and pretty – at the time we described our ideal yacht as ‘not a Ford Mondeo, but a classic Jaguar’.

We stepped on board and fell in love. EMILY MORGAN has surpassed our expectations; she has taken us around the world in comfort and style and we have been able to continuously improve her along the way. We have achieved all our dreams, and more.

John Kretchmer, in ‘Sailing a Serious Ocean’ says that ‘the Bowman 57 is one of the most capable and accomplished fibreglass yachts ever built...it is a tough, capable boat that doesn’t seem 57’ long…Only the Ocean71 has a record as impressive.’

She is in the best condition, kept to the exacting standards of MCA Code 0, including annual surveys, maintained to our exceptional standards as befits an ex-flight inspector and aircraft technician.

Ideally EMILY MORGAN will be bought by a couple who will continue to charter her, as we have built a very successful business with EMILY MORGAN at its heart. Alternatively, she lends herself to a family who want to embark on a big adventure, such as taking her around the world again. Until we find a suitable custodian for her, we will continue to share her with guests.

    PRESS REVIEWS:

My husband, and I intended to be cruising the world for some time, with no particular plan to circumnavigate, and we had a pretty reasonable set of criteria for the vessel that would help us get there. The boat had to be sturdy, capable of handling heavy seas and possible collisions with floating objects, and manageable for each of us alone. It had to be comfortable under way and at anchor, and it had to be pretty. We expected to sail doublehanded for the most part, so we wanted a split rig.

At the end of a long search, the boat that sang to us was a Bowman 57 ketch, which was designed by Holman & Pye, who later designed many Oysters, and built in 1976 by Bowman Yachts, located in Southampton, England…

…She’s a “boat-shaped boat” with beautiful lines, a delicate transom, and a wave-splitting bow. Drawing more than 8 feet, she’s not about to go gunkholing, but she’ll certainly handle a sea well. Her skeg-hung rudder is protected behind a substantial fin keel onto which the mast is stepped. The hull is solid fiberglass-no balsa core to rot, no foam core to get soggy or crack. If she hits something solid, she’s likely to bounce.
With a beam of less than 15 feet, the Bowman 57 is svelte by current standards, and the design’s slenderness makes a difference belowdecks. It’s possible to traverse her length with handholds all the way…

…Ketch rigged and with double headsails, the 57 can take on sail in small enough doses for each of us to be able to handle them. Aleria behaves like the big boat she is, responding more slowly to the helm than what we were used to. My first turn at the wheel was intimidating, but I took comfort in the feeling from the center cockpit that following seas were a long way “back there.” Once under way, balanced and in the groove, she sails like a freight train.
