Well known to us here at Grabau International ISLAND PEARL II is now in only her second ownership. Having spent the first part of her life doing very little, but always professionally maintained, she was then sailed by her new owners to Australia where she has continued to do very little other than be pampered and upgraded. With a typically comprehensive blue water inventory and many recent updates, ISLAND PEARL II represents a fantastic opportunity to enjoy one of these iconic and unique cruising yachts in good to go order.
Buying an Amel is akin to joining a clan of like-minded sailors, of which there are many hundreds around the world cruising happily. Amel owners are almost a cult. New owners are brought to the Amel facilities in France and given a week of introduction to their new boat and its systems. Then the new boat normally is sailed on its own bottom, either by the new owner or by Amel’s delivery crew, to her new home. ISLAND PEARL left the Amel factory on 23 January 2001 and sailed from La Rochelle (France West Coast) where the Amel factory is based across to the Canary Islands in the North Atlantic 250 miles off the West Coast of Africa – Morrocco. From 2001 for ten years until December 2011 she was carefully maintained at great expense by the Amel technician based in the Canary Islands. Her first owners would fly over from France occasionally to stay on the boat in the lovely Pasito Blanco Marina on the southern tip of Gran Canaria Island.
Since we are the second owners of this yacht, we missed out on the week-long factory orientation. Whilst this is our seventh sailing yacht, it was always our intention to one day purchase an Amel. For this reason we had already looked at many Amel’s on both the east and west coasts of the USA and right across Europe plus done a lot of research on Amel’s unique features prior to us purchasing this particular boat. Despite this, it has still taken us two years of slowly working through manuals and systems and sailing across the Atlantic and in Australian waters, to become fully acquainted with all the great unique Amel features and we could not be happier with any other boat.
We sailed Island Pearl II over the Atlantic Ocean from Pasito Blanco in Gran Canaria to St Lucia in the Caribbean in January 2012. For this trip, and the onwards delivery through Panama and across the Pacific we hired a professional skipper and crew. This provided us with an excellent introduction to the boat, her amazing ocean sailing capabilities, and also invaluable blue ocean sailing training by a professional skipper with over 200,000 ocean miles experience in all types of vessels.
Since arriving back in Australia, we have invested a great deal fitting her out to our requirements. She now has imported davits, 540w solar panels, new watermaker, 2nd full new Raymarine auto-pilot (2012) with quick change over switch, new radios, 2 X Raymarine chart plotters new 2012, AIS send/receive Raymarine new, full new rigging (2016) imported from Amel’s supplier ACMO in France, etc etc.
Our plan now is to sell ISLAND PEARL II and buy a near identical Amel back in Europe to enjoy sailing in the Med and surrounding waters.
ISLAND PEARL II is mechanically and operationally she is absolutely sound and ready to go around the world immediately with her new owners. She is also fully duty and GST paid in Australia.
