Judel/Vrolijk designed Baltic 43 with just two owners from new, well equipped with many updates over the years and ready to go. An iconic design and capable of everything from crossing oceans to sailing around the cans.
FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:
Launched in 1987 for her original Finnish owner, ‘POLAR BEAR III’ has just two private owners since new. Under her first ownership, she had the benefit of the short Scandinavian sailing seasons with winters spent ashore in a heated boat shed. Her current UK-based owners purchased her in 2004 and have enjoyed local cruising around the UK’s South Coast, English Channel and down to Northern Spain and Portugal. Although mainly used for cruising POLAR BEAR III has competed in the occasional Round the Island Race where she has demonstrated her competitiveness with a class win.
Continuing the trend set by the first owner, POLAR BEAR III has continued to benefit for storage ashore each winter with her current owners carrying out numerous updates and upgrades over the past seasons including replacement of the teak decks in 2005 (the decks are covered over every winter to minimise wear-and-tear), new engine in 2007 and replacement rod standing rigging in 2017.
Whilst enjoying great performance, POLAR BEAR III is a great example of Baltic Yachts’ also legendary build quality and attention to detail which creates a boat with superb seakeeping qualities. A Baltic Yacht is very much a connoisseur’s choice of boat for those who really appreciate fine build quality combined with great timeless design and performance. After so many years of ownership ‘POLAR BEAR III’ is only being sold to make way for a larger Baltic.
‘POLAR BEAR III’s specification highlights include: • 3-cabin, 2-heads interior layout with master stateroom aft. • Replaced Volvo Penta D2-40 diesel engine with Gori 3-blade feathering propeller. • Replaced rod standing rigging. • Replaced teak to deck and cockpit. • 12vDC watermaker. • GPS chartplotter and radar • VHF radio. • Smart TV/DVD player. • Fusion sound system. • Replaced rudder blade stock and bearings. • Diesel heating. • Replaced electric anchor windlass. • Replaced batteries. • Solar panel. • Inverter. • Electric winches. • Removable inner forestay. • Mainsail stackpack & layzyjacks. • Inflatable tender & outboard motor. • Liferaft.
‘POLAR BEAR III’ has been carefully maintained, is British Part III Registered, deemed UK VAT Paid and ready to go for the sailing season.
OWNERS’ COMMENTS:
We’ve owned Polar Bear III, (Hull number 16) for 18 years and during that time she has proved herself to be a safe and comfortable sea boat; easily handled by two people. Her sailing qualities are legendary and much deserved. Memorably voyages are many including cross channel to France, Bay of Biscay to Spain and Portugal. But she is perfectly capable of undertaking long ocean voyaging.
We fitted electric winches on main halyard/mainsheet and Lewmar 55 electric winches on jib to make sailing her easier for a short-handed crew and this has proved to be of real benefit. Also, the use of the water-maker reduced our dependency on marinas and ties to the shore.
The accommodation works well whether for cruising or the occasional regatta. We have found on many occasions that the owner’s cabin is a haven of peace and comfort – irrespective of noise or weather. Overall Polar Bear III represents an excellent example of the Baltic 43 and is a tribute to Baltic Yachts’ build quality and Judel/Volijk design.
She is always stored ashore over winter.
MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:
“Baltic 43 was the second serial production model where we cooperated with Judel/Vrolijk as Naval Architects. Judel/Vrolijk had at this time been successful on the racing scene with similar sizes of yachts including Admiral Cup contenders like Container.
The Baltic 43 was developed using experience from these successful racing projects combined with Baltic Yachts´ known capability in building light constructions. Detailed weight studies were carried out in order to establish a light, but still realistic and achievable displacement.
The styling, deck and interior layout was done by our own designers. The interior incorporated the already well-known Baltic Yacht double centre berth owner´s cabin. The Baltic 43 also allowed more flexibility in layouts giving clients greater opportunity to customize their yacht.”
