The Southerly concept was first launched in 1978 with over 700 examples of the concept having been launched since. The brand centres around the swing keel and the boats ability to explore those stretches of shallower water out of bounds to the normal sailing yacht. Continually developed the Southerly designs have proven a success with blue water cruisers with many examples crossing oceans and exploring water high latitude waters.
With only her second owners since build URSA MAJOR is a well-presented example of the class. Professionally maintained and continuously upgraded, she benefits from a comprehensive cruising inventory. In commission she has already completed cruises to Ireland and the Outer Isles this summer and is offered in sail away condition.

OWNER’S COMMENTS:
‘Since purchasing ‘Ursa Major’ in 2006 we have had her professionally maintained with numerous upgrades being made to increase comfort on board and improve her performance. During the last 11 years we have enjoyed sailing more than 6000nm in the waters between France and Cape Wrath. Never once in all these miles has she let us down or left us questioning the abilities of the Rob Humphreys design. We have looked after her with little regard to cost. In turn she has provided some exhilarating sailing (we regularly tip 7kts under sail), always looking after her crew regardless of the conditions. The swing keel has given us an extra dimension to cruising, especially when exploring remote anchorages. The head room below and being able to see ahead under the sails when navigating or knocking up lunch have also been huge assets. We will miss this great fun little ship.’
MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:
Hanse 385 is the 4th new model out of the new Hanse family of Hanse dynamic cruisers, characterized by the optimum space efficiency and comfort from 11m hull as well as the outstanding cruising performances. In a standard equipment you’ll get two steering wheels in the cockpit, fold-down stern boarding platform, optimum deck gear distribution and a self-tacking jib. Spacious and functional interior and safe and enjoyable exterior make Hanse 385 a desirable yacht for sailors appreciating fast cruising or anchoring in a beautiful day.
DESIGNER’S COMMENTS:
‘Northshore commissioned the Humphreys team to design the popular Southerly 110, a 35’6” variable draught cruising yacht which embodies the established features of the range. The hull and rig of the 110 incorporate the latest in HYD’s design thinking which has evolved over many years of experience. The Southerly 110 sets high standards of performance versatility and good looks for a yacht in this class, and appeals to family and cruising yachtsmen equally. Like other models in the series, she has the signature Southerly swing keel which broadens her sailing opportunities immensely, as she can explore shallow waters with the keel raised but still make confident passage in high seas with the keel lowered to its maximum draught of 2.18m.
On board, the aft cockpit, plumb bow line and twin rudder configuration combine with an impressive sail plan to make this yacht exhilarating to sail. The single-wheel direct steering with twin rudder arrangement offers instantly responsive helming and she is easily managed by a crew of just two. When the wind increases and gusts attempt to push her off course, the hull form and swing keel enable her to embrace the elements in her canvas while the twin rudders give good directional stability and control. In fact, the Southerly 110 is so light on the helm she can sail herself much of the time. Below decks is an attractive interior arrangement: a large double cabin aft and a triple bunk berth in the bows. The centrepiece is a spacious galley and dining area which provides a cosy and comfortable area for on-board socialising.’
