Originally launched in 1972 as Hull No.6, ASTRID has benefitted from a total refit and restoration over the past few seasons, culminating in her relaunch in the Autumn of 2021.
Surveyed following completion of the works, the surveyor summed up her condition with the following words:- “This vessel has been subject to a bare hull refit carried out over many years, including new teak decks, full epoxy treatment, topsides and superstructure re-gel, new machinery, all systems, electronics, deck gear, spars and rig. She is now in ‘as new’ condition, but with the benefit of modern-day technology. She is now in effectively better than new condition.. In my opinion, the value of your boat, for insurance purposes in her current condition, her rarity value, and allowing for the current market is approximately £240,000.00..”
In addition to updating and replacing all of her systems and components, ASTRID has also benefitted from optimisation of her underwater sections including the repositioning of her rudder and skeg further aft to improve her sailing characteristics. Such modifications are popular amongst the Sparkman & Stephens Swans and represents yet another indication of the attention to detail given to the yacht by her obsessive and knowledgeable owner.

“The Swan 44 sleek, smooth low-profile is one of the most successful big production boats available.
A winner of the Boat of the Show Award at the 1973 Earls Court Boat Show and the Italian Nastro d’oro Eleganza Mare in the same year, the Swan 44 offers both good performance and superbly finished and fitted accommodation.
She is built with the care and craftsmanship that has become all too rare in modern boat-building. Several of the Swans have been entered in the Admiral’s Cup Race.
The ocean racing intentions are obvious from the boat’s flush deck and the fact that there is no companionway from the cockpit. Entry to the cabin is through hatch. All deck fittings are of high standard. The fore cabin is intended primarily for stowage although there are two comfortable pipecots fitted.

“Of all yacht designers there is perhaps only one name that stands as a reasonable guarantee that a new design will be successful in the racing sphere. And even when that name is Sparkman and Stephens tere are certain of the firms boats which are expected with more than the usual anticipation of grandeur. The most recent production boat that fits this description is the Swan 44. The reason for this has much to do with Noryema VIII´s win in the Bermuda Race this year. A Swan 48, to which the new 44 is closely related, she went a long way towards knocking the belief that large production boats cannot compete against more expensive one-offs. The Swan 44 therefore is expected to respond well to fine tuning and any prospective Admirals Cup contender not wishing to play a stake in the uncompromising one-off game might do no better than to invest his money in this Nautor built Swan.
As a prestigious cruising boat, of course, one would be hard put to find a better appointed one. With only six permanent berths and two pipecots forward one can hardly call her cramped. There are two quarter berths aft, a separate toilet compartment and navigation table to starboard and a large galley and hanging locker to port. Forward of this “working “area is a set of opposing pilot and settee berths with a dining table amidships. IN the fo`c`s`le is another hanging locker and aforementioned pipecots. One word to the cruising man however- Access below is through a hatch in the deck. Since S&S cannot guarantee to keep the rain off, she will be suited to the tolerance of a racing crew than to mother-in-law.”
