With just one private European owner since new, CHINA BLUE is Hull 65 of 75 Hylas 46’s constructed by Queen Long Marine to designs by German Frers. Launched in 2007, like all Hylas 46’s, CHINA BLUE boasts a beautiful semi-custom finish and a comprehensive cruising specification. Perfectly suited to long-distance liveaboard cruising, the Hylas 46 has rapidly achieved cult status on both side of the Atlantic, although finding EU-supplied, CE-certified and tax paid examples is very rare. CHINA BLUE is just one of a handful of such examples.

“What’s she like to Sail?
‘With electric furling for genoa and main, she is easily handled solo, which is essential on ocean passages. The elevated helm position feels secure rather than exposed, although low freeboard means the odd dusting of spray makes it into the cockpit. On passage, I could have tucked myself in under the sprayhood and keep watch from there. Switch off the autopilot and shes pleasing to steer, tight and responsive, but don’t expect the sort of feedback you’d get with a balanced spade rudder. As bluewater cruisers go, she’s really quite rewarding to helm.

What’s she like in port and anchor?
With the bimini up and the sprayhood down, the elevated cockpit will be shaded and high enough to catch a gentle breeze. Then step down onto the sidedecks, fold out the transom’s bathing ladder, grab your mask and snorkel from the transom locker and explore the reef. Rinse off the salt with the deck shower, then settle in the cockpit and grab the cold beer passed through the hatch to the galley. There is a boarding ladder in the lifelines for clambering aboard from a tender or pontoon and at the bow there’s a saltwater deck hose for cleaning the anchor and chain.

Down below, the aircon and fans will keep you cool in warmer climes. In more temperate areas there are plenty of opening hatches for ventilation, all fitted with fly screens. The owner’s cabin aft is the more sumptuous of the two but the guest cabin is well appointed with a decent amount of stowage. Both cabins are en suite and on a 46ft blue water cruiser, any more than two cabins is wasting space.

Would she suit you and your crew?
She’s a tried and tested solution for comfortable ocean cruising. She has solar panels on the sprayhood, a Watt & Sea towed generator that fits in a transom bracket, generous tankage, reliable generator and watermaker. The build quality throughout is exceptional and when you need to wield a spanner, as ocean cruisers must, you’ll love the maintenance access.

She’s ideal for a crew of two. With electric winches, furling and bowthruster, she’s easily managed and confidence will come from that. When you want to invite guests, the appointments in their en suite cabin will keep them very comfortable. The galley is kitted out with everything you need to entertain and the saloon is highly convivial. Just make sure your guests have booked a return flight or they’ll never leave.”

“The people at Hylas have brought us a series of cruising yachts drawn by German Frers and built at the Queen Long yard in Taiwan. I always liked the clean and modern styling of this yard’s detailing. They’ve never built one of my designs, but I always wished they would.

Frers has one of the best eyes in the business, and his track record – from Maxis to Grand Prix racers – speaks for itself. This new Hylas is an effort to update the line and build on the center-cockpit concept.

At first glance at the profile you can see the effect of today’s emphasis on sailing length. Overhangs forward and aft have been eroded away to a DWL of 39 feet and a D/L of 196. This 46-footer has an L/B ratio of 3.36. It’s a very attractive hull shape with a pronounced forefoot knuckle at the cutwater and an even distribution of rocker fore and aft.

The rudder is a partially balanced spade with a small fractional skeg, which allows for a lower bearing for strength. The Hylas 46 has staterooms for two couples, with additional sleeping space available on the main cabin settees… The Hylas also has two heads and each has an adjoining shower stall.

Note also that the Hylas has moved the head forward of the berth in what we usually call a Pullman-style double forward. The shape of the bow severely limits how far forward you can push the head, with the result being that, in this model, you get a big forepeak.

On deck there are unusually wide side decks: a feature that I like. Excessively wide cabin trunks can and do create the feeling of airiness and space below; but they inhibit side deck width and put undue pressure on sheet leads and deck arrangements in general.

You can trust that German Frers would not give you a slug. This boat has the numbers and the pedigree to give it good performance. Aesthetically, center-cockpit boats under 50 feet are a challenge, but this one is okay… I do like the sexy hull shape; and it is for this reason alone I think the new Hylas 46 will make some of its competition look dated.”
